"The Amish had the best parties"-The Devils Playground, Tom Shachtman
So what exactly do these teens do? Where do they live? What happens when they come home? How does the local community respond?
At the age of 16 is when they set out for two years of life in the modern world. A lot of time they get a small apartment or share house with other teens on Rumspringa, they would often still throw parties within The Amish community in their barns.
The documentary The Devils Playground, takes a raw look at what teens are doing during Rumspringa, and it is exactly what you expect wild teenage behavior to look like. Lots of smoking cigarettes, drinking, smoking weed, and unfortunately trying harder drugs they do not display in the film.
A police officer in one scene describes how these parties would have hundreds of kids at one barn on the communities property, with loud music blaring and underage teens drinking.
The Amish community believes in turning the other cheek, this is also just a regular part of their religious ritual.
